Sri V. Ganesan – Ramana Periya Puranam
THE IMMORTAL AND ONLY GURU
Masthan Swami experienced an inner conflict after receiving Bhagavan's Grace. Until then, his master had been the Prophet Muhammad. Although Allah was God and the Prophet Muhammad was his guru, here was a living guru—Ramana Maharshi. He wondered, "Am I being disloyal to my other guru, the Prophet Muhammad?"
He was filled with Bhagavan's presence, yet because he had been raised in the Islamic tradition, he felt, "Am I abandoning my master Muhammad simply because he is no longer in the physical body?"
Fortunately, he was courageous enough to go to Bhagavan and confess:
"Bhagavan, this is my problem. Please help me."
Bhagavan looked at him silently for some time...
Bhagavan was never interested in the question itself. Instead, he was always interested in the one asking it.
Looking at Masthan Swami and pouring out all His Grace, Bhagavan replied:
"Do you think this body is Bhagavan? Do you think the Prophet is dead? Then is Buddha dead? Is Jesus Christ dead? Are they not still guiding hundreds of thousands of people even today? Do they not live in the hearts of people? A living guru is one who lives in a person's heart as their guru. A living guru does not mean someone who is physically alive at a particular moment in history and in a particular geographical location. The guru lives eternally in your Heart. The Heart is Allah, the Heart is Jesus Christ, the Heart is Buddha, and the Heart is Bhagavan. Live in the Heart as the Heart by diving into the Heart."
These words were later recounted to me by Viswanatha Swami. Since I could not fully understand them at first, I asked him:
"Please explain them so that I may understand."
He said:
"The Guru is always beyond time. The moment you speak of the Guru in terms of time, you introduce death, birth, life—all of that. There is only the Guru Principle, which is the Heart of us all."
I asked,
"Swami, how can you say that?"
He replied:
"A devotee came from Lahore. Tiruvannamalai and Lahore are more than a thousand miles apart. In the 1930s and 1940s, travel in India was extremely difficult. He could only stay for about a month. When it was time to leave, he wept before Bhagavan and said, 'How can I leave You and go away, Bhagavan?'
Bhagavan replied, 'Where are you going? Can you ever leave Bhagavan? Bhagavan is always with you. Bhagavan is within you. In truth, you are Bhagavan.'
See the beauty of that answer. When Bhagavan says that you are Bhagavan, how can a Ganesan or a Viswanathan be Bhagavan? It is the 'I AM' in Viswanathan and Ganesan that is Bhagavan. The living Master always abides in the Heart as Consciousness.
That Consciousness which is in you, in me, and in every one of us is Arunachala Ramana, God, the Self, the Heart, Allah, Jesus, Buddha... We may give It any name we wish.
