  • Aรงรฃo Sem Apego aos Frutos (Nishkama Karma): ร‰ o princรญpio central.

Bhagavad Gita (Capรญtulo 2, Versรญculo 47)

KARMA YOGA THE YOGA OF ACTION

Karma Yoga is one of the classical paths of Yoga described in the Indian philosophical tradition, particularly central to the Bhagavad Gita. While many people associate Yoga only with physical postures (asanas) or silent meditation, Karma Yoga is known as the Yoga of Action.

The word Karma comes from the Sanskrit root Kri, meaning “to do” or “to act”. Thus, Karma Yoga is the practice of transforming every action in daily life into a spiritual discipline.

THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF KARMA YOGA

To understand Karma Yoga, it is essential to look at the pillars that sustain this practice:

  • Action Without Attachment to the Fruits (Nishkama Karma): This is the central principle. It means acting with dedication and excellence, without becoming attached to the results — whether praise, profit, success, or failure. You do your best and release your need to control the outcome.

  • Selfless Service (Seva): Acting for the benefit of others or the community without expecting anything in return — not even recognition or gratitude.

  • Sacred Duty (Dharma): Fulfilling your daily responsibilities — as a professional, family member, or citizen — with presence, integrity, and dedication, treating your work itself as an offering.

  • Renunciation of the Ego: Recognising that we are not the sole and absolute authors of every outcome, allowing us to remain humble in success and free from excessive guilt or frustration when things go wrong.

HOW TO APPLY KARMA YOGA IN DAILY LIFE

Karma Yoga does not require you to withdraw to an ashram or renounce your life. It can be practised anywhere, throughout everyday life.

At work, for example, it means carrying out a task with complete focus and quality, rather than spending your time anxiously seeking only promotion or the approval of others.

At home, it can mean caring for your home or preparing a meal as an act of love, presence, and devotion, without resentment towards repetitive tasks.

And within the community, it is reflected in helping someone or volunteering sincerely, without the need to publicise the good deed or receive a “thank you” in return.

“You have a right to action, but never to its fruits.”
Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 2, Verse 47

In essence, Karma Yoga teaches that freedom does not come from escaping the responsibilities of the world, but from changing the intention and attitude with which we act within it.

When action is no longer driven by selfishness or ego, it becomes a source of inner peace, freedom, and mental liberation.
