  • Causas Naturais: Defendeu que as doenรงas tinham causas naturais (ambiente, dieta, hรกbitos) e nรฃo intervenรงรตes divinas.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Main Contributions of Hippocrates

• Clinical Observation: He initiated the detailed recording of symptoms, focusing on the physical examination of the patient for diagnosis.

  • Natural Causes: He argued that diseases had natural causes (environment, diet, habits) rather than divine interventions.
  • Medical Ethics: He created the Corpus Hippocraticum, a collection of texts including the famous Oath, which defines the ethical conduct of physicians and their commitment to do no harm.
  • School of Kos: He founded a school that promoted medicine as a science, teaching the importance of prevention and understanding the human body as a whole.
  • Theory of the Humors: He developed the idea that the body was composed of four fluids (blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile), whose imbalance caused disease.
Hippocrates, often called the Father of Medicine, left a legacy grounded in observation, ethics, and the principle of doing no harm.
The so-called Oath of became a symbol of that moral commitment.
However, over the centuries, medicine has evolved, structures have changed, health systems have become complex and, unfortunately, they have also come to involve economic dimensions.

This does not mean that the principles have completely disappeared. Many physicians continue to practice with deep integrity, guided by vocation and service. Within medical schools, medical ethics, bioethics, and professional responsibility are still taught — although, as in any human field, tensions exist between the ideal and reality.

Perhaps the real question is how each generation can rediscover the original spirit: to care for life with awareness, science, and compassion. Medicine requires technical knowledge, but it also requires heart.
